UTARC 1986 ARRL November Sweepstakes

These photos are presumed to be from the University of Texas Amateur Radio Club (UTARC) effort in the 1986 ARRL November Sweepstakes. It is clearly a multi-operator HF radio contest that took place at the club station, W5EHM, on the U.T. campus. There are timestamps on the back of the prints that indicate the film was developed in January, 1987. We think the color prints come from the CW weekend, and the black and white prints from the phone weekend. The last two prints, unfortunately, have blemishes on them.

If these photos are, indeed, from the 1986 ARRL November Sweepstakes, that was the year that W5EHM made the #10 spot in the Multi-operator catgegory, CW.

Robert Barron KA5WSS looks on as Curt Black N5HPD (now WR5J) adjusts the Kenwood TS-830S transceiver. The round red thing on the wall is a large speaker. You can see a large "dupe sheet" on the table in front of the radio. This was before the era of computer logging, and everything, including checking to see if a station had been worked before, was done on paper.
Robert Barron KA5WSS examines some pages from the log. Below the large world map on the back wall are several pages of reminders and strategy notes for the operators during the contest.
Robert Barron KA5WSS makes a phone contact and writes it down in the log. Notice that the Heathkit SB-220 amplifier was sitting on the table back then. It would later be moved to a shelf inside the 19" equipment rack next to the table.
Robert Barron KA5WSS enters information into the dupe sheet during the contest.
A view of the operating position and some of the team members in the club. This layout of gear would remain substantially unchanged for another ten years.
In this shot, you can see that the dupe sheets are very large, taking up almost as much space on the table as all of the gear combined!
Operating late into the night at W5EHM...
