UTARC 1998 Collegiate Chamnpionship

A detailed writeup for these contest efforts are available for CW and Phone.

The Collegiate Championship was held as an official part of Sweepstakes this year. You can find out how the club did by checking out the Collegiate Championship home page.

Robert K5PI was part of the duo (along with Ken KM5FA) which put N5XU on the air for the CW portion of Sweepstakes this year.
K5PI cracks a smile as he builds his way up to a sweep in CW. This was the first-ever claimed CW sweep for UTARC!
Robert K5PI continues to work stations while checking for possible TVI on his left and grabbing some Dizzy Grizzlies on his right.
As is customary, N5XU used N6TR's TR Log logging program to keep track of the score and handle the CW sending chores.
Early on in the phone contest, Ken KM5FA is working the rotator controls.
UTARC alum Robert KA5WSS runs stations during the Phone portion of Sweepstakes.
Ken KM5FA is tuning the Kenwood TS-830S, looking for a good place to call CQ.
A good view of the equipment in use. The club used its venerable Kenwood TS-830S and Heathkit SB-220 amplifier, pictured to the left here. The TS-930 is a recent donation to the club but has some problems with the microphone circuitry.
Another view of Ken KM5FA working stations.
Robert KA5WSS tries to dig out one of those 5 watt, wet noodle in the attic stations.
UTARC alum Kevin KT5I takes the controls on Sunday and pushes the rate back up where it belongs.
Kevin continues at it. Note that the contesting food of choice, Dizzy Grizzlies, have returned!
Night time is not the time to stop operating, just move to a lower band.
In the background of this shot of Ken KM5FA, you can see the black mug the club earned for a clean sweep in the 1996 Sweepstakes.
This is a good shot of the equipment in use. On the bottom row is a Kenwood TS-830S with the external VFO, and a Kenwood TS-930S. To the right of the computer monitor and speakers is the CDE rotor controller, the MFJ Deluxe Electronic Keyer, and the Kenwood AT-230 antenna tuner. In the 19" rack, you can see the Heathkit SB-220 amplifier and the antenna patch panel. We used the TS-930S for the CW contest, and the TS-830S for the phone contest.
Kevin KT5I is apparently not a touch-typist.
